Saving Family Fun

Keeping Indy's Family Fun Free, or at least cheap.

Rainy Day Attractions

What to do on a rainy day, or a hot day, or a cold day?  Here are some free and cheap ideas…

Visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art soon because they will begin charging $18 in April. Right now there is $5 parking with free admission. The IMA is well known for their outdoor attractions, but the museum provides some indoor experiences that you can share with your kids.  Admission is free and they offer an activity book at the entrance desk to help you and your children learn more.

There are also 30 minute tours designed for families.  The tour schedule includes many different topics, some are even ASL interpreted.

The Learning Curve at Central Library in Downtown Indianapolis offers a high tech learning environment.  They offer many classes but if you are looking for a quick outing, there is an interactive green wall, a play area for small children and reading nooks with digital books.

The Park @ Traders Point Christian Church

The Park @ Traders Point Christian Church offers an indoor park for children that is open to the public. It features a two story tunnel system with a slide and plenty of areas to climb. They also offer a section for babies and toddlers to safely climb and explore. There are even a few tables and you are allowed to bring a snack. We have been to this indoor playground several times and always have a good time.

Technically they are not located in Indy, the building is just a minute from the northwest boarder (but it is on Indianapolis Rd.)

(UPDATE: This program is closed for the season.)

How about bowling?  Three bowling alleys in Indianapolis offer 2 free games of bowling for children 15 and under, everyday all summer.  For this one there is a little work and you do have to pay for shoe rental (around $2.25 for 12 and under).  First, register at KidsBowlFree.com (they will send you the coupon immediately then once each Sunday.)   You will need to find the alley that you will use and register there.  This program is running from April 9 – August 26.
